Reckoning with Lancaster, together with the Program in Africana Studies and the Department of Italian Studies & Hebrew,
presentsa special screening of Il Moro/The Moor (2022), a short film written and directed by Daphne Di Cinto followed by a virtual Q&A with the filmmaker on Monday, March 9, 2026 at 4:45pm in the Leiks Cinema - Winter Visual Arts Center.

Daphne Di Cinto is a Black Italian filmmaker, writer, and actor. Il Moro/The Moor is her first award-winning film as a director.
The title of her film refers to Alessandro de’ Medici, who was Duke of Florence in the 1530s. Alessandro was the illegitimate child of Pope Clement VII, a member of the Medici family, and an enslaved African woman. Based on careful historical research, the film reimagines the moment when Alessandro is chosen as the Duke of Florence and explores the psychological complexities of his search for a sense of identity and belonging. In addition, Il Moro/The Moor sheds light on Renaissance histories of enslavement and forced displacement of people.
